What they said:

Dana Sullivan Writer/Illustrator  •  danajsullivan@comcast.net

“During his visit to our school, Mr. Sullivan captivated his audiences. With our younger students, he shared the story behind the book Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari, photos from a visit to Kenya and talked about the children who live and learn in Kenya. Older students were thoughtful and engaged during a graphic novel work session. Mr. Sullivan’s presentations were informative and engaging for students and teachers alike! Our students loved the personalized notes and drawings that Mr. Sullivan added to the books he autographed.”

I love to visit schools and can do full school assemblies or smaller presentations in the library or other spaces.

For younger students, I focus on my ILA Children’s Choice selection, Kay Kay’s Alphabet Safari. I offer background on how the book came to be, including the Kenyan story that inspired it, along with the process of submission, revision and dogged persistence. I then demonstrate how an illustrator actually produces final art for a book. Finally, we have a little fun converting audience doodles into lively illustrations.

For older kids, I offer a one-hour graphic novel workshop, complete with demo and instruction. The kids then write and illustrate their own one-page graphic novel.

The presentations stress that although writing and illustrating require hard work, it is important to have fun, too. I remind them that philosophy applies to writing, math, music, sports or other challenges as well.

If you decide to book a date with me, I can work with a local book store to coordinate advance sales of my books, should you decide to exercise that option. And of course, I'd be happy to sign them while I'm there.

I would love to work with you to set a date in the coming school year.

"Dana was a dynamic, engaging speaker for our K-3rd graders. He gave encouraging messages about writing and drawing, and the kids loved watching him draw! We appreciated hearing the origin of Kay Kay's Alphabet Safari and learning about the Star of Hope school in Kenya."

“I highly recommend Dana Sullivan for an author visit at your school.  Dana is engaging and inspires students to become writers and illustrators. It is always magical for students to see an author demonstrate his thinking and the results of hard work and effort.  They leave believing that they, too, can write great stories.”

“Dana Sullivan is a wonderful speaker, illustrator, and author. When he drew Ozzie from his book Ozzie and the Art Contest at our school, the audience was enthralled. Teachers and students all wanted more of his time.  He educates, entertains, and maintains a rapt audience for his entire presentation.  I highly recommend him to any age group.”
